Resources & Reviews

Below are a host of resources and books which I use in my caregiving efforts.

They are chosen as sustenance for caregivers on the journey with their loved ones.  May they  encourage you in self-nurturing and help you.

Daniel Ladinsky has done the spiritual not religious folks... or even the orthodox ones a great service in his re-interpretation and "translation" of Hafiz. This collection overlaps with many of his other books but includes a lot of others not there. The daily format is a great way to begin a practice or just a serendipitous insight into your moment. You will laugh and be enriched by this book.

Okay. We all KNOW about the 12 steppers of all kinds who adhere to these rules, but this book illuminates that wisdom and deepens it in delightful ways. I can't recommend this book enough.

This book speaks eloquently on the Book of Thomas and its wisdom. It has great stories which I have used regularly in my sound meditations. The author's take makes the material very approachable.

Psalms for Praying: An Invitation to Wholeness
This is a beautiful interpretation of the psalms....to promote love & reduce fear...

"Yeah though I walk...through the valley of the shadow of fear...

As an interfaith chaplain, I care about lifting up providence and a personal connection with a loving Higher Power.  These psalms sometimes substitute "Beloved" (as great Sufi poets do...) for the more common (and theistic "Lord").  For me, supporting people of any belief at the end-of-life, I tend to go to the basics - i.e. love is the boss of us.  These thoughtful re-interpretations of the psalms speaks to the core of Judeo-Christian-Muslim traditions...i.e. LOVE.  I recommend it highly.

The Artist's Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity
Stands the tests of time...ancient wisdom showing up for us again...and again

I have revisited this book recently in my (ahem...) dotage and remember the lessons that I gathered from it back in my twenties. It still rocks! And it rocks me back, again, to my own authenticity.

Between Julia Cameron's basic tools of the "Morning Pages' and the "Artist's Date",  it works us.  When applied, it brings us back to center in ways that never stop being useful. This is especially important when we are caregiving others at the tender edges of life.

Buy it again. I don't think you will  be disappointed.

A Course in Weight Loss: 21 Spiritual Lessons for Surrendering Your Weight Forever

Illuminating our subcutaneous stories that got baked in...before we knew we were in an oven...

Having had a 'conversation' all my life with a certain 10 pounds on my thighs, I thought I had heard most illuminated approaches to weight loss.  But Marianne has, brought an illumination to the deeper reasons we over indulge in the banquet before us. These are deep issues and stories in us. The book shines when it gently dives deep into these topics.  I found it quite useful.

It is not as effective when she delves into self disclosures.  I find this distracting but,  I recommend this book highly.
